turkeys attacked

I had a turkey bitten by a raccoon (I think). It was active for about 12 hours afterwards but had a bone sticking out with a gaping wound. I needed to kill it. Does anybody think it is safe to eat? Can we catch an illness even after it is cooked? Thanks for any help.
