I was wondering what type of wood you will use for the coop located in S. California? Plywood (which grade?) Pine, treated....? I really would like the coop to last a long time and be good quality overall, however, I am on a budget so I don't want to go too overboard either. I already have the paint and primer. Thanks

I make these out of OSB and they last for years and years as long as you keep them painted. I use exterior semi gloss.

There are more pic. at "my coop"

Good luck

Look and see if there's a habitat for humanity in your area. You can get discounted 2x4 lumber and plywood and other building supplies for slightly less. Craigslist often has free or cheap wood options. Often people are giving away pallets which you can use by standing up on end and bolting together or if you frame traditionally you can dismantle the pallets and use the boards as siding. Any lumber short of cheap CDX plywood should last in our very dry climate provided it has a decent coat of exterior paint on it. lumber in direct contact with the earth should be pressure treated

@Warmseth:

We have two Habitat ReStore stores in the Kansas City area. i took Friday afternoon off from work so my wife and I could go look for specifically for coop roofing material and price other stuff for our home. There was not much in the way of decent stick or sheet wood and they were wiped out of roofing material (probably because of recent storms). Plumbing, electrical, interior, kitchen, bath, etc. were pretty good, but general building materials were pretty sparse. Hundreds of windows, but none of them small enough for our coop. Maybe Habitat ReStore is better for coop builders in other cities -- it's worth checking out.

I have never came across with any Habitat Restore, but I was planning on buying it through Lowes or Home depot.
Hemet dennis, your coop is so lovely. How much did you end up spending on making it? What are the dimensions of it?
Thanks again for your input.

The size is 6' x 4' the cost is less then $50 plus paint. I got a bunch of free paint from Craigslist then I put the last coat of the red.

$50? Waoooww!!!! I could never found that cheap. Last weekend I went to Home Depot to buy a OSB board (the cheapest) for my compost bin and one board was $10.
As for my coop, we hired a friend of a friend to make ours, but to reduce the cost of labor, we are going to try to purchase the most important before, prepare the spot where we are going to build it, and then help him out. The coop is going to be 8 by 6 and as for the high Im not sure yet. I already purchased the hardware cloth, vinyl (for the floor), primer, paint and that is about it. I found some great deals in Craigslist, but unfortunately I always have to rely on my husband who doesn't want to deal with it (I have a 10 weeks old baby and a toddler, so there is no way I can do it myself)
Anyways, I can't wait to get it (we will start in June).
