So, this ceased to be an emergency this morning when I went up to the coop and found one of the Black Star hens under the roost, stiff as a board. I first noticed her day before yesterday, uncharacteristically tranquil / lethergic when I walked intonthe henhouse to gather eggs. Just sat there rather than scurrying out of the way like all the others. Yesterday same story. Very quiet, not moving around, just hunkered down in the pine shavings under the brood bar, breathing quietly. This morning, rigor mortis.

My other hens and the roosters are all running around energetically
The hen in question is a year old Black Star, with most of her feathers intact. One spot on top of the tail where it looks like feathers have been pluckednout, but otherwise no apparent problems until yesterday.

    Two questions:
1). Anyone else in Eastern Peensylvania or West centrlal NJ experienced anything like this recently?

2). If you have any idea what this might be, Is it contagious?

The only vet I am aware of that handles fowl is about 20 mi N, near Quakertown .

Thanks for whatever help/ advice you can give!

    Bob

Every state has a poultry lab for necropsy. There's no way to know what it could have been without lab work.

    Here are your labs.
