    I got permission from UPA to post this and also use it as a sticky if the forum wants to. List all the species, patterns and color of peafowl as of today.

    United Peafowl Variety List

    The UPA approved a new peafowl variety list at the 2005 convention.
    The new list is a complete listing of all peafowl varieties possible at this time.
    This list is intended to help breeders have a more consistent listing of their peafowl.
    Included in this list are Pavo Muticus and Pavo Cristatus. These two are listed separately as well as the Hybrid variety "Spalding". The name "Spalding" was given to this variety due to Mrs. Keith Spalding, who was the first person to mate together the two peafowl species Muticus and Cristatus.
    In the India Peafowl there are ten colors and five different patterns. These colors and patterns make up 10 varieties for each the India and Spalding Peafowl.
    The India varieties are listed with color first; then pattern, (if multiple patterns, then the oldest pattern is listed first with each different pattern listed in next sequence of existence).
    Hybrid varieties are listed with Spalding name first, then color, then pattern (if multiple patterns, then the oldest pattern is listed first with each different pattern listed in next sequence of existence).
    The varieties that have been omitted from the new list are Oaten, Red Buff and Emerald. The new list eliminates two names for the same color.
    Example: Cameo Black Shoulder is the correct name for the Oaten;
    Spalding Black Shoulder is the correct name for the Red Buff Spalding.
    Emerald is not used in the Hybrids now, because many Spaldings are bred for Phenotype, not green blood and may not be a high percentage of Green blood.
    Many Spaldings were represented as Emerald that were not actually a high percentage of Green but would show the green characteristic due to the variables from breeding Hybrids.
    If a breeder wants to have the "Percentage of green blood" listed this can be added to the end of that variety".
    At the present time about half of these varieties already exist and more are being developed.
    Please read the list to familiarize yourself with the varieties.

    Taupe or Violete and then list them later in the total color and patterns.. Thanks for spreading the word that there area lot of different peafowl out there and a number more still coming in the color dept. George dba connerhills http://boxess.com/connerhills

    Off hand I dont know the count but all of the colors are out there and all of the patterns but not all patterns in all colors.. I am aware of a number of other colors that are not even listed and when these get going there many be 400 on the list .. The question was about the 1/2 and 1/3 .. .. 30 yrs ago when I first started in peafowl I thought is was just a matter of doing it like mixing paint. you put a little black into white and you start getting gray and a little more black will make it darker and over the years is saw the error in my ways .. Some one else can explain the places where the gene is a lot better than I can .. but generally I know what to do with what to get what you want .... It is just a matter of building the foundation sires to get the end results ,,, but it does not alway work by the punnette square and sometimes takes years and most people do not want to spend many years trying to build something like a peacock color or pattern. somethime it just happens and expands from there. george
