So my husband brought home 5, 3 month old guineas yesterday. I have built a chicken tractor with materials I had and they seemed to really like eating around the yard today.
I have recently moved in with my dad and have brought my dog with me. I have had her since she was 4wks old. She was a house dog, who never barked or hurt a fly!
Since we have been on the farm (3months) she has been around 3wk+ old kittens (found in the horse trailer) tons of birds that fky around the house, turtles, toads, a skunk and who knows what else.
This morning when I put the guineas in the 4x8 enclosed cage she sat there watching the birds. When I went to the porch she followed me with no interest in the birds. I went in to get my salad and check on my dad, wasnt 5 minutes and the cage was collapsed on one side and 3 guineas were gone!! There were a few feathers laying around , she doesnt have blood on her and I cant find any remains of "bird" so I am hoping they just Ran off!!

Do you think those three will come back since there are two others still here or do you think they are gone for good?! I am so upset!! I NEVER would have thought she would do something like that :( we live on 57 acres with huge farms all around us! [IMG]

I just went outside to "walk" around and found a guinea by the back porch just pecking the ground like," I'm free hahaha!!" So at least I know it is ok but I have NO CLUE how to "catch" it!! I dont see any sign of the other two so???? Ugh

Something similar happened me a few years ago
I got 2 Guinea fowl and it the next day the 2 of them had escaped out
Of their shed and I never saw them again
    Hopefully yours will come back
If you have them for a while they will
Know that that is home so they should come
    Back by dark
    Thankfully you have one back
I hope the other two come back :fl

Put some food and water out by the tractor by the other guineas. I hope they come back. Do you have a big net you might be able to catch them with that. Good luck I hope they come home.

Since you've had them such a short time it is "iffy" but there are some things you can do to help. Put food and water right outside the tractor the others are in. Hopefully that will draw them. If you can get a dog crate or pen, so much the better if you can put a roost in it. Hopefully they will stick around for two weeks or so. If you let the others out then, they might follow them back in. If they go to roost in the crate, you can go out at night and shut the door.
    Good luck and welcome.

Ok I am sad and happy!! One of the two that are in the tractor is limping and its front long toe is bent....so guessing its broke.
My son and I took off on our 4 wheeler to ride around and just see! Sadly we found a dead one, i checked it out all over. There were no puncture wounds, blood so?! But it was dead.
The one that we found alive hung out right behind the house all afternoon. We have an old rootceller that is all grown up around it, so it was in bug heaven.
I started ziptying all around the tractor and heard a guinea behind me (in the horse square pen coming out of a thick bush) He was calling and calling and calling and so I stepped onto the porch so he could come near. We kept them in a dog crate last night and I had that next to the tractor. We (my 15yr old daughter, 6yr old sonand myself) corralled him into the cage. Shoooo 3 out of 5 is good.....then we heard the 4th one calling! It was coming across the front yard, so we put the other in tractor and corralled the 4th one into the cage!!
I am sad one died!!! I am sad my dog is attracted to big birds!! I am happy we were able to corral the other 2 and now have 4 out of 5!!! Sheeeeesh!! What a first day of guinea owning!! I am sure there will be many other crazy adventures with these birds!!

I'm sorry about the loss of your guinea but happy you were able to find the other 2 and get them secured safely. That was an awful start to your first day of having guineas.
