By accident I found my dogs will follow the placement of their dog bed to sleep. The dogs will readily sleep on frozen ground even when covered by snow, but locations are not always ideal to monitoring chickens and repelling bad guys by presence alone. They really like to sleep in the beds, am guessing because they are soft. What I have begun to do is place the dog beds where reclining dog has line of sight on areas where chickens are located while the dog is resting. The result is time greatly shortened where someone like Red Fox and Great-horned Owl can probe pen areas in particular. In my setting it is possible to get dog to sleep among pens when dog might otherwise sleep closer to house or even towards barn where dog activity is not needed. For me this is proving to be a break through.
