i want to start doing my own hatching. my wife is worried the chicks wont be vaccinated. like for mareks for example. what do i say. dont really know that much about it.
There is another post about this, sorry I don't know how to post it on here but you can go back a few pages and find it. Personally I never vaccinate my chicks and I hatch them out by the thousands. Vaccinating for small backyard flocks is not usually recommended. Also if you are talking about just a few chicks it will be hard for you to do, cost wise. The vaccine comes in 1000 dose viles, after you mix it you cannot save it, so if you just vaccinate a few chicks you just have to throw the remainder away. Also I have been told by breeders that if you vaccinate your chicks and put them in with other poultry you "could Possibily" infect them. this is a live viris you would be giving them. I believe, and this is just my opinion, that if you maintain a clean operation it is just not necessary.
thank you poultrylady. i dont think i need to. i am trying to ease my wifes fears. i never visit anyone elses chickens.
