Vasoline/petroleum jelly/coconut oil

How often do you apply vasoline/petroleum jelly or coconut oil to the waddles and comb?

We are expected to get some cold weather in the next day or two. I live in the Black Forest area of Colorado Springs, just south of the Palmer divide. With this being my first winter with chickens, I am learning all kinds of new things. My HOA will not allow electricity to my coupe. So anything goes at this point. I applied some petroleum jelly to my girls combs and waddles this afternoon. Just was curious how often it should be done. I will let you know how it works.

Especially wonderful for Roosters waddles, since they get wet from drinking

I would apply probably morning and especially at night. Easiest to do when they are all in and roosting.

I live in western SD, and we do get cold, but I have never done this either. I really don't think you need to. You can if you want, but they will be fine without it too.

When it "sometimes" gets really cold here I'll put some Vaseline on the hens waddles, comb and legs. I honestly don't really notice that it protects them that much from frostbite.
