My 5 1/2 WEEK old BR/EE cross, Soupy has some problems. I hatched her and one other egg from my flock and they stayed in the same brooder until last week when I put them together with my 4 month old Frizzles in the basement brooder (b/c it was still too cold at night for the Frizzles to join the coop & I had to get rid of our roo first).
Two days ago I put everyone in the big girl coop together at nightfall. In the morning, Soupy had clearly been a vent victim of someone's pecking. I I hadn't noticed any problems prior to that although the 5wk olds were clearly fearful of the Frizzles, I never saw them picking at her. When I took Soupy out of the big coop for an inspection, her vent had dried blood all around it and her vent appeared to be protruding somewhat. I soaked her in a warm bath to try to remove the dried blood and poop, but it still looked pretty chewed up (as if the injuries weren't just from that one night perhaps, but I can't say for sure). I then dabbed some Blue Kote on the reddened area surrounding the vent opening (so that's what's so dark in the photo).

Every time I check her vent, there is loose, primarily whiteish, poop coming from her vent (see photos below). The poop does NOT smell normal either, it has an "off" odor about it that I can smell passing by the brooder.I have seen her eating and have seen brown poop in the litter when I initially segregated her.
Can someone please tell me what the problem may be and how I can help her now? I'm not sure where to go from here.

I am no expert, but is she laying eggs? I tried doing a search on here for you but I haven't seen any pictures that look like that.

Does it smell bad? Cuz I know that could mean an infection.

I hope someone with more knowledge can help!

I will keep looking to see if I see any older posts like yours. Good luck!

No she's not laying eggs. She's only 5 weeks old. The poop smells bad, but not the general area (although I didn't do a really close sniff test).
Thanks for responding.

I did some looking the only thing I can find is egg bound, vent gleet (from which I understand is like a yeast infection)

Since no one is responding, if mine are prolapse or anything I would soak her in warm water to clean the area. Take her away from the flock and keep her in a dark area so she stays calm. do you have any vitamins in the house? Like the ones from the feed store, or the infant drops without iron.

Looking at her it looked infected to me that is why I asked if it smelled gross. I know it isn't like you want to put your nose there. lol

And if no one else responds it could be the time of the day, try to get your post to the top around 4 today and see what happens. I will continue to look for you just in case I missed something.

You're right. I forget that people work outside the home! I do have children's vitamins and she is in a box in our living room so I can keep an eye on her.
Thank you for your attention to our problem, I appeciate your concern and research. I'm going to go investigate "vent gleet" and see what that says.

I'm a newbie and don't have any experience with this kind of stuff but I'm hoping someone will post something to help Soupy!!! I'm just guessing if it's an infection to get her on some kind of antibiotic... whether topical or oral???

Hope someone has some better advice!

Thanks for your reply. I've only had chickens since July 2009 myself and have never had a sick one. This is the first chick I ever hatched and it makes me sad to know that she is in pain. She cheeps most of the day and makes some really weird noises periodically, which I can only imagine are when she is trying to poop. The smell though...it's bad.

Yeast infection? Would that explain the smell somewhat?

In addition to the vitamins, give her all soft food with some probiotics in it.
You can even put on a glove and apply some cultured yogurt to her vent.
