2 days ago I noticed my indoor 7 month old chicken had a bit of a raspy voice with cough, still has this and shakes head at times but seemed ok but then I noticed sore vent with yellow/white drainage. Sadly we have the chickens for eggs first and she has yet to start laying so I am unable to spend 45 on nystatin..... I put some probiotic powder in her water, I plan to get yogurt today. I cleaned her up. I do have (from my children's past) ny stating cream and probiotic drops... I dont know if they would be safe tho. If there is any other easy home remedies please let me know! I hope not to lose her!

    Hi[IMG] Welcome To BYC

    Can you post some photos?
    What breed is she?
Any other respiratory symptoms besides cough - mucous from the nostrils, runny eyes, sneezing, etc?

    More concerning is the cough.

The discharge from the vent - is it like yeast/vent gleet or is it more like egg/egg yolk?
    Any swelling/bloat of the abdomen?

For vent gleet you canapply some anti-fungal topically to the vent - so you could try the Nystatin cream applied topically - I can't tell you if it's absolutely "safe" to use, but more than likely used as a topical cream as intended it would probably be fine.

Probiotics are fine - you need to decide whether your going to add them to the water, give yogurt(probiotics) or give orally. IMHO just choose one method. Most feeds contain probiotics nowadays, so giving some extra won't hurt, but you don't want to go into overload[IMG]

    Keep us posted.

Thanks for the quick response! No abdominal swelling and no nasal drainage but I can hear her exhale.

    Attached is vent pic

Ok so i think vent is improving and she actually just layed first egg today. But i feel like she still has something up with her throat or somrthing. No drainage... Still eating amd drinking and lively.... Could it be worms? I dont see amy in her droppings? With out vet visit what should i do?! Wait it out?

    Is her crop emptying overnight?
    How often is she coughing?

If you have a video of her that may help. A few common causes of coughing can be from respiratory illness, mold/mildew, poor ventilation or dry dusty bedding and feed.

I will try to get a video. I plan to recheck her crop tm, did not seem entirely empty this morning and was bigger this evening than the other chickens. She has no other symptoms and none of the others have it. Cough or like throat clearing noise happens every 10 mins maybe. She's eating n drinking and still full of energy. Will attempt video in am. I did massage her crop this evening too
