A Veteran is someone, who at one point in their life, wrote a blank check
payable to the United States of America for an amount up to, and
including, their life. That is beyond honor, and there are way too many
people in this country who no longer remember that fact.

Thank you, veterans, for your service.

My father in law is gone now. Almost two years.

Among the possessions he left in this world was a metal. The Purple Heart.
Took shrapnel to both legs in a far away place called Korea. His blank check
    had a price.

Chief lived with his last few years. Mom gone years ago, and Chief crippled by
a stoke. I spent hours talking with him. Talked about his whole life. Except the
    time he spent in battle.

That was one place he couldn't talk easily. Oh, he would tell me about marching.
Or boot camp. Rations. In all the years I knew him, he never once spoke about
fighting, or being wounded in action. I knew he had been wounded. He was a
    part of my life always.

I would bathe him. Scars covered his legs. Even then, he woudn't talk about it.

I want to take a moment to share one of the memories I have of him with you.

Fourth of July is a big deal here. Fireworks in the night. He would go with us, even
when Mom was still alive. He did that for us, to be with us. But they bothered him.

He would jerk with every boom, couldn't hardly stand for the sky to be lit up.

I've never been in battle. Never been in a war. Because of him, and the thousands
of men and women like him, I've lived in the free.

    Because of the brave.

I never saw his Purple Heart until he was gone. Never gave it a thought until we
were cleaning out his bedroom. A drawer full of metals.

So yes, on Veteran's Day I think of this man. He wasn't rich, he wasn't famous. But
he will always be my hero.

He wrote that blank check for us.

Quote:That is a very touching story. I think there are many veterans out there just like him. My father-in-law is 90 years old and still does not talk about his time in the military.

Air Force wife here. Lived in Colorado, Utah, Ohio, then back to Utah again, with my husband over 20 years of service. He was in the Nat'l Guard for five years prior to that, ROTC before that, Civil Air Patrol before that.

FIL was AF, BIL was Navy, adoptive father was Navy, adoptive mother was a Marine (my sons think that was so cool, LOL), biological father a Marine and executed by Castro's firing squads at the age of 25, and a cousin went missing in Vietnam, never to be found. Long military association for me.

Utmost respect here for our men in uniform and their families.
