This one has been very hard to tell if it is a dude or a lady since the very beginning. Today, she/he was out in the bright sun and I thought I saw some hackles. [IMG] Our Buff Roo has been running her/him away from the food at feeding time as well. She looked like a she until recently, but now I'm thinking she is a HE!

    What do you think?

    EDA Additional info:
    Hatched late June, 2010
    ~6 months old
    Black Orpington

"Votes" as of 5 pm 12/8:

The hackle feathers are on the neck:

I can't make out the ones on yours to tell clearly. How old is the bird?

They do look like sickle feathers to me, but you'd better wait for somebody with a little more experience in this [IMG]

being 6 months old Im gonna say girl. I think that if she was a he the tail ans saddle would be longer also the comb and wattles dont look big enough. Are you sure she isnt laying somewhere else?

green, I see where you are looking and in that first shot, I see it too. The hackles do look a tad boyish, but nothing else about this bird points to roo. Hmmm. Is it an Australorp? I think you have a pullet there though, even with the boyish neck collar [IMG]

I dont see a single saddle feather, and her legs are pretty thin. I say girl.

its a girl if she is 6 months old.sometimes the true older, bigger breeds take awhile to mature.i have 8month old reds who are just now thinking about laying.
