They do look similar - RIRs are a bit darker on average, and have a single comb rather than a pea comb. The woman who created the Buckeye breed was aiming for a red hen with a pea comb (she lived in Ohio and wanted a bird that was cold-resistant), so that's one of the diagnostic traits of the breed now. We got her almost on accident - we'd gone to a local gal who gets large batches from Ideal, with our hearts set on buff brahmas. She encouraged us to get three birds instead of two (just in cases...), and she had this one lonely buckeye chick that had come in an assortment, so we decided sure, why not? And brought Princess home along with our two BBs. So glad we did! She's wonderful fun, and we get to feel extra good about getting her because she's a rare heritage breed.
