Hi! I am thinking of getting some turkeys in the spring and I want to get some info on what breeds are good and that kind of stuff!
My big question is can I keep my turkeys with my chickens? I am building a new coop in the spring and my pen is plenty big enough. I may even make a little private turkey house. I live in the New England area so are there any certain diseases I would need to worry about?
I am only going to get 2 or 3 turkeys.
I'm not interested in eating my turkeys. I want to keep them as pets. So what is a nice calm and somewhat quiet breed? Quietness doesn't really matter but if some are quieter than others i would want those. :)
My last question is can they eat the same as my girls? Or do I need to get them special turkey feed?

Yes, you can keep your chickens and turkeys together and yes they can eat the same thing.

Is it okay to only get one turkey and a few hens to go with it?

I keep my turkeys and peafowl with chickens *and* I have had issues with histomoniasis (blackhead), so I keep lots of metronidazole (Flagyl, Fish-Zole, Meditrich) on hand for when I have an outbreak. Many people raise them together and never have any issues, I'm not that lucky, lol.

When you say 1 turkey and a few hens? You mean turkey hens or chicken hens?

I must ask what exactly is blackhead? I've heard of it but don't really know what it is....
