I have recently been contacted by our city health dept that my chickens, as reported to them anonymously [IMG], are illegal per the following from the "General Offenses" section of the codified ordinance:

505.14 PROHIBITING THE KEEPING OR HARBORING OF CERTAIN ANIMALS WITHIN THE CITY.
No person shall own, keep or harbor any of the following enumerated animals at any premises or on any property within the corporate limits of the City: cattle, sheep, mules, goats, pigs, hogs, poultry, wolves, wolf dogs, timber shephards or wolf mixed breeds.
    (Ord. 11647/03. Passed 1-8-03.)

I had scoured the zoning code before I acquired my chickens and found nothing. I even had an experienced urban planner back my search up and he was convinced city code was silent on the matter; he was quite surprised it is located where it is.

I'm also disappointed to my lovely, innocuous little ladies classified with a group of animals, larger, more intensive livestock and bog wolf dogs.

I would like to "fight" the city on this, in the hopes of at least calling attention to the larger picture and making an impact over the long haul for my community. Any and all tips are appreciated!
