I just hatched 3 silkie eggs. One of my 4 silkie hens sat the eggs and is raising them. The eggs were not hers but were from the other 3 hens-this mama can’t lay. One of the chick has just developed these large wart-like lumps on its beak. the lumps are thick like a wart or callus but don’t move. I tried to peel a bit off, but it won’t budge. The other two chicks are not affected, nor are any of the adults. I’m afraid the growths are going to block his nostrils- they must be very fast growing as I feed, water and clean up the nesting box daily and didn’t notice until now. I would say they sprung up in the last 3 days or so at the most. Does anyone have any idea what this is and more importantly, what I can do about it? I do not know of a vet near by that handles poultry or birds. I’m in rural north florida. Please see photos.
Thank you!!

They are attached to just the beak. They aren’t covering his nostrils yet, but it won’t take long for that to happen. The are pliant, firm but rubbery feeling, but I can’t get an edge to peel off the beak.

This looks like fowl pox a virus from mosquitoes. Chicks have a much harder time with pox than grown chickens, because those large scabs can develop over nostrils and eyes, so breathing and finding their food and water are a problem. I would dab a little betadine on the scabs. Normally you don’t want to disturb the scabs, since that can spread the pox birus. But here you need to make sure the eyes and nostrils are clear.

Thank you! I will look at the link and I put some “animax” on it but will try the betadine. It is very close to his nostrils, so i’m very concerned. I live in north Florida, so mosquitoes are a big problem.
I really appreciate your reply!
