When I picked up my chicks yesterday, she said she was almost positive she gave me 5 hens and 1 rooster. I have been studying the new babies trying to verify that, by looking at feet and spots. I was wondering if it is too early to tell (they are 2 days old), or if it's possible to tell by the photos, because I'm thinking I might have ended up with two roosters. I'm new to chickens, so I could be way off. Thank you!

Chick 1 (was told this was the rooster)

    Hello!

From what I know, spots and leg colors have nothing to do with gender; they are a result of the color genetics. It truly is too early to tell what the chicks are unless you would like to learn how to vent sex, and even that is not 100% accurate. The best thing to do is wait and watch the chicks grow. Roosters tend to have larger combs and wattles by 2 months than hens. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to tell what they are until that point. I hope this helps you, and good luck!

Sometimes the legs are thicker on males. There are some youtube videos on sexing baby chicks. The ones for "Dirty Jobs" are pretty funny too.

Opinons are like belly buttons, we all have a different one.

My vote for the rooster goes to chick #4.

Barred males will have yellow in the head spot, I think she was correct in here guessing. and feet color do make a diff.

In spite of everyone's best guesses and yes, the head spot is fairly close enough for hand grenades at hatch. But the best time to sex Barred Rocks is at 5-6 weeks. That 1 percent will fool you, but 99% of them are easy as pie at 5-6 weeks.

The combination of males=bright white stripe, little wattles sprout and red combs? Dead on.
The combination of females= darker feathering, messy, cuckoo "barring" and yellow comb? Dead on.

Wait until 5-6 weeks and then you'll know for virtual certainty.
