We have 5 RIR's (7 weeks old) in a coop in the backyard. We also have 4 leghorns about 3 weeks old in a wire cage in the basement. A little while ago, I hear a crash at the basement door and go look, there is a small hawk sitting on a fence post about 20' from the basement door, looking, (if such a thing is possible), somewhat disgusted. He saw me and flew off. I decided to keep the RI's locked up in the coop a little longer. By the way, we live back in the woods, not in town.

Wow! He tried to get into your basement?! Do you have a cover (wire mesh or anything) over your run? We live in the country as well and often have two large bald eagles circling overhead. They will sometimes bring their juvenilles with them so for us a covered run is a must. If you're free ranging, do they have plenty of cover for hiding in around your yard? I'm with you on keep the little ones cooped up awhile longer! Good luck and
