Water and food - just pawns in the game of chicken

our girls make a MESS of their food and water if i keep them locked in their run/coop during the day. they scrape the floor of the run into the water, smoosh the pine shavings into the food, and generally tear up the joint.

question: how can i keep their water and food clean, while still leaving it out for them to get at?

some ppl use hanging food and water, hanging so the shortest chicken doesn't have to stretch, but the tallest cannot kick stuff into it.

I use metal hanging feeder that is positioned head high. And place their waterer up on bricks or a turned over feed pan.
