We are new to chickens, and with cold weather approaching, I was wondering if I should use a water heater for the girls?
I'm also new to this site, so if I'm in the wrong area, please kindly direct me to the right place :)
Oh, and a random question...how do you guys get your flock info at the bottom of your posts?

Hmmm, there's no place for a forum signature for me for some reason :( Maybe I don't get one as a new person?

As for the water heater, do I need one though? We don't freeze or snow here, and I wasn't sure if it was something they need in the winter period or if it was only for colder climates?

I just moved up from the Sacramento area earlier this year to Southern Oregon.

I'm not too worried about freezing up here and would worry even less down there. Last good hard freeze I remember in the Sacramento Valley was back in the 90's. Their water might get a little crusty with ice on the colder nights if it's on the shady side and stays cold during the day, but if your changing it daily should be fine.

    Good luck.

We only get a few nights that are really cold. Like they said above, it might get an ice crust of sorts, but the water won't freeze solid. We don't worry about heating water.

Where in Oregon did you move to? I lived in the Columbia Gorge for a few years. I love Oregon :)
Thank you for the info. I think you may be right, and that's where I was leaning, but since this is my first winter with the girls, I wanted to make sure!
