We originally purchased two chickens in April of 2014 with my son naming the two Halley & Hanna after two fraternal twin girls in his 3rd Grade class.

About two days ago Halley was injured by an animal in the early evening before returning to the chicken coop. She had a bad cut on her back & we kept her in isolation away from the other chickens hoping she might recover.

Today Halley died & I thought it would be appropriate to have her buried in our composting area where we have a mobile chicken coop on skids. I made a 20 inch x 20 inch open box casket. My son dug the hole placing a 2x8x16 inch cinder block in the bottom & then using similar block for the tombstone

I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember when one of my first hens passed away in my arms at almost 7 years old. It's always heartbreaking.

Agree, I'm very very sorry for your loss and I also remember when I loss my first hen... my dear Rosie that I loss when I was 10 I think. So sad, then I loss many others the next week by a coon... it was horrifying waking up before school seeing that bloody mess outside your door :(
Its always heartbreaking even for people who don't even care about there chickens (big chicken farmers, etc.). Finding a hen dead is just torture to anyone that's see it's. Again I'm so sorry for your loss and I'm sure you will always remember those amazing memories from those girls. Just think of the good things that have happened and the good things to come. Again I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sorry and I'll pray for you. I hope the best for you and your family.
