I got home today to feed the starving hordes, and I found one of my original best breeding BLRWs roos dead in the pen. I couldn't tell for sure since it's been raining and chickens have no respect for the dead, but it appeared he'd been fighting one of the cockerels. His comb was a little bloody, but he didn't seem to be beat up like I would have expected. A board that I have set on some bricks for shade was flipped off and on the ground, but I'm not sure if that had anything to do with what happened. I hate that I'm working at our shop now and don't get to mingle with my birds a lot during the day like I used to. I maybe could have prevented something from happening. I'm just really puzzled because everyone has been getting along great so far, even though there was four adult roos in the pen all winter... [IMG]

But then, I got to thinking about last summer when he and his sibling roo were penned together. They seemed to be getting along fine with everyone, and then the deceased roo turned on him and whipped the daylights out of him any chance he could. I guess it's getting time to narrow down the candidates and making the decision on who gets to stay and who has to go, which means I have to ready another pen. Sometimes I think all I do is build new pens![IMG]

Sorry Bliss, but maybe the roos won't fighting....
maybe the board or bricks somehow flipped over and clobbered your poor roo.

No, it wasn't the board that got him...that I can tell. He was in the middle of the pen near the door, and the board was in the back corner several feet away. It's not a big or heavy board, so unless it fell on him just the right (or wrong) way, I don't see where that could have hurt him.
