I can't believe I did this. OK, in my defense I'm 8 mos pregnant and half lost half of my brain I think...

My DH got up this morning at 6am and looked outside and saw chickens running all over the place!!! Apparently I never locked them in the coop last night!!! I remember looking outside to see if they were in the coop and most of them were so I was going to wait a few min before going out there to lock them in for the night and somehow forgot??

I'm just really thankful that nothing happened to them. I'm not sure I could have forgiven myself. I guess they're free ranging today cuz there's no chance of getting them back in now! man. and I have to go somewhere today too. I hope they're ok.

thanks for listening to me ramble.

S'ok...I've been there 3 times...the baby steals your brain cells along with most of your calcium.

I take it they don't normally free range all day?

Well, they 'were" free ranging all day but there was a hawk stalking my neighbors chickens so I've been just letting them free range in the afternoons since we don't leave go anywhere in the afternoons. if we take off we take off in the morning. They'll prob be fine, I just won't be!!

The bad thing is you never get it back.

I have done that before, except by the time I found the chickens they were in the front yard and tore all my flowers up I had planted the night before.

oh gosh, eating your plants? NOT FUN!!!

Well, I know I don't get ALL the brains back, LOL! BUT, I do get some of them back, hehehehhe. not right away of course, that takes time esp with the sleep deprivation etc

I'm SO SO SO SO SO thankful that they are ok! I am one of those paranoid chicken moms ya know?

It happens. I asked a neighbor to shut mine up one night because I knew we wouldn't be home before dark, only I told him the wrong night.
The night we came home at 1 AM, the door was still wide open. The chickens were all sitting on their roosts looking at me like would you close the door already?
The next morning my neighbor opened the door @ 7 AM, cuz he thought we were still gone. I know that blew the chickens minds, cuz Mama ain't never up by 7 AM.

Glad to hear it was okay - I think we've all done things like that, pregnant or not. (And beware, 'pregnant brain' lasts until the baby is walking and talking... *at least*

Pat, whose kids are 2 and 5 and nonetheless accidentally locked two of the chickens out in the run for the night, a month ago, fortunately with nothing bad happening.

Done the stupid a few times here also. Just last week in fact. I was closing up the chicks first and set my beer down on a shelf inside the coop so I could go close the door and one of the dummys flew across the coop and dumped my beer

. So after cleaning that up I totally forgot to close up the big girls and my EE was out wandering around the hen yard when I went out to open them up the next morning. Boy did I get the look when I opened the door to check on them.

I have three kids and you never get all your marbles back, don't feel bad. Glad you birds were ok through the night.

Well, I forgot to lock the gate to the run one morning when I was in a hurry to go to the grange to bake 40 pies for the blueberry festival the next day. It was about a month ago.

Well, the dogs got into the run and played tug-o-war with one of my black sex links, Eva. I still feel really bad about it, but I bet I never forget to lock that gate again! It's a lesson learned the hard way. I'm glad you didn't have any losses like that.

oh, and I've got three boys: 9, 6 and 4 years old... still haven't gotten completely rid of the "pregnant brain." lol
