So, my family and I are about to embark on the adventure of raising chickens ourselves. We are very much looking forward to learning a LOT and having some fun. I am very sure that we will be looking to "peck" your brains for all of the details that we have probably not yet thought about! Thank you for being here! I am so glad that our friends told to start with Backyard Chickens! See you around the Hen House!

Hi and welcome to BYC. Many prefab chicken coops are not necessarily the best quality and almost always do not accommodate the number of birds they claim. I'm not sure if space allows, but buying a garden shed is likely to be cheaper, stronger and do the job better than most coops that you can buy. I agree with CTken.
A "homemade" coop is THE way to go.
If you check your local free section on Craigslist you should be able to get a good amount of free material to start and/or finish a coop.
