So yesterday while working on a pickup in my garage, a friend of mine informed me that my aracuna was on the wrong side of the fence..great. So I scurried her back in the pen, seeing as she is the only one that won't just let us pick her up. I decided at that point that today I needed to put the netting over the top, so that this won't happen again because I really don't want to clip the wings on my beautiful girls. ANYWAY, so I went back out at dusk to close my coop up for the night and tuck the girls in and noticed that the clump of bird in the coop looked kind of small, so I separated them out and then realized horridly that my baby Mac was not in the coop and it was dark. I searched my yard and my neighbors and then drove to the next street over and searched my other neighbors yard. So I went home, put out a spot light in my back yard and went in for the night. I told my wife, she probably roosted for the night so be out of the way of predators, and would be back in the morning. My wife, as upset as she was said that when she got up in the morning she would go check (her I need to pee @ 4am cause I'm pregnant schedule). So she did this morning and there was no bird. I got up at my normal time and did my routine, and as I was getting ready to go down stairs and out to my truck I looked out the back window and there she was TRYING to get back in. I went outside, and she came running over and flew right up on to my shoulder...lol. I think she did not enjoy her night alone. So all is well but I figured it would be a story to share!

I had this happen twice. The first time my dog scared her when she was going back in the coop. I had myDH and Ds looking for her well after 11:00 p.m. They could not find her. Well the next moring she showed up and wanted in the coop. I could not sleep all night frightened she would be killed. The second time my DS didn't take a head count, the next morning to my surprise I found one trying to get in the coop at 6:00 a.m.

I myself was worried about a sad ending as well, up it turned out like I hoped. I am putting netting across the top today when I get out of work. My wife, who is pregnant with our first, shared with me lastnight that she felt like having pets with our kids is a bad idea because she saw the dissapointment in me last night when I couldn"t find my little mac. I explained to her that this is part of having pets, but it is better to raise with pets, then to not. Plus, there was no way we were getting rid of our two 12 year old dogs, 3 cats and such. Sigh....

Kids and Pets just go together like peas in a pod. Teaches them a little responsibility, how to deal with life and death, hard as it is, and is just plain fun. I think it teaches patience, kindness, loving and lots of sweet sacred moments. We have mice, rats, fish, alpacas, three dogs and one cranky old cat, and love them all.
