I have a chick that acts like it's crowing but no sound comes out and he tries really hard! Does that mean it's a rooster or does he have a hairball? Sorry I'm used to domestic pets!

Canada eh?
Well, chickens don't have hairballs, mainly because they don't have hair. Chicks don't crow that early, so it has something caught in its throat. I hope it's not gapeworm. I would suggest posting this in the "Emergencies/ Diseases / Injuries and Cures" forum saying that you have a chick making "crowing" actions. Good luck.
