i was wondering what medicated feed you are allowed to use and the negatives and positives of using it, also what are the other medicines that would be good to supplement into the diet also wormer?(all pertaining to quail breeds)

Generally you don't feed medicated feed to quail as they are prone to being sensitive to most of it and it does more harm than good.

i thought that was just one chemical in the medicated feed that harms the birds, i also thought that they made a medicated feed that didnt include that one ingredient i just dont know what it is. my only issue is that i plan on gettingnew blood lines in a few months and i want to minimize the chances of anything bad coming in with them.

Quote:ya might try isolating them for 14-30days before introducing them to your flock depends on how they were raised but stress is almost as bad for quail as disease is

Quote:YOU'RE LIKELY THINKING OF AMPROLLIUM (COCCISTAT) WHICH ISNT APPROVED FOR USE IN QUAIL BY THE FDA... LOTS HAVE IN THE PAST DESPITE THIS. (THIS IS WHATS IN THE FEED WITH TAGS MARKED "FOR PHEASANT USE ONLY")

THE BIGGEST THINGS WITH MEDICATED FEED ARE #1 TOXICITY.... MANY OF THESE FEEDS ARE DESIGNED AND MEDICATED FOR LARGER SPECES OF BIRDS. SO WITH QUAIL CHICKS,,, AND ESPECIALLY BUTTONS TOXICITY CAN BE ACHIEVED EASILY BECAUSE THEY ARE SO MUCH SMALLER THAN THE ANIMAL ORIGINALLY TARGETED FOR MEDICATION. #2 UN-NECESSARY USE OF ANY MEDICATION CREATES TOLERANCE IN BOTH THE ANIMALS AND THE DESIGNATED ORGANISMS THE MEDICATION IS DESIGNED TO TREAT( MEDICATION RESISTANT STRAINS OF INFECTIONS APPEAR ONCE AN INFECTIOUS ORGANISM BUILDS A TOLERANCE AND MUTATES TO OVERCOME THE MEDICATION) #3 SOME PREFER NOT HAVE CHEMICALS IN THEIR BIRDS... WHILE THIS IS A PERSONAL PREFERENCE MEDICATION MAY BE NECESSARY FOR ACTUAL ILLNESS OUTBREAKS #4 SIDE EFFECTS --- ANY CHEMICAL INGESTED MAY HAVE SPECIFIC SIDE EFFECTS SUCH AS KIDNEY DAMAGE OR LIVER FAILURE.

HERE'S THE BIGGIE... MOST GAMEBIRD SPECES WILL NOT RESPOND TO THE ANTIBIOTIC USUALLY FOUND IN FEED OR ON THE SHELF IN FEED STORES [IMG] FOR CLINICAL INFECTIONS IN GAMEBIRDS THE RECOMMENDED THERAPY IS MOST OFTEN A COMBINATION THERAPY AND GENERALLY SPEAKING BAYTRIL IS 1/2 OF THE COMBO--- AVAILABLE ONLY THRU YOUR VET AND WEIGHT SPECIFIC DOSEAGES ARE NEEDED. MOST TIMES DUE TO THE COST OF TREATMENT AND THE SEROCONVERSION FACTOR (WHERE SURVIVORS NOW BECOME CARRIERS) TREATMENT IS RELEGATED TO ERRATICATION ( SOMETIMES THE TRUTH AINT PRETTY..)

WORMERS ARE A COMPLETE DIFFERENT STORY. ALL WORMERS WORK WITHIN THE ANIMALS DIGESTIVE TRACT (THE DRUG DOES NOT ABSORB INTO THE ANIMAL) THEY WORK BY PARALYZING THE PARASITES AND IRRITATING THE GASTRIC MUCOSA (SPEEDS THINGS UP SO THE BIRD GETS THE TROTS AND POOS OUT ALL THE INVADING AND NOW PARALYZED PARASITES) AND SOME ALSO WORK TO PREVENT REINFESTATION BY KILLING ANY WOULD BE EGGS FROM THE PARASITES. AGAIN FOR RESISTANTANCE REASONS ITS BEST TO ROTATE WORMERS SO PARASITES AT YOUR LOCATION CANNOT BECOME IMMUNE TO YOUR FAVORITE WORMER. PUMPKIN IN ITS RAW UNCOOKED/ UNPROCESSED STATE CONATINS A NATURAL ENZYME THAT DEWORMS BIRDS AND THEY LOVE TO EAT IT AS A TREAT... MANY OF US DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO IT YEAR ROUND THO, BUT WHEN AVAILABLE ITS A GOOD DEWORMER. WAZINE, SAFEGUARD, IVERMEC, AND A FEW OTHER PRODUCTS CAN BE USED ORALLY TO DEWORM BIRDS SAFELY...SADLY ACV DOES NOT APPEAR ON THE LIST (WHILE I'M SURE ITS BENEFICIAL TO THEM AS A DIETARY SUPPLIMENT IT HAS NO DEWORMING PROPERTIES THAT CAN OR SHOULD I SAY HAS EVER BEEN SCIENTIFICALLY DOCUMENTED)

The only precautionary "medicine" I use for my birds is Apple cider vinegar.
