Buff Orpingtons are a great dual purpose bird.

Welcome to BYC! Happy you joined! Good starter chicken breeds that I would recommend are Australorps, Barred Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Red, and Orpington. All of those breeds are easygoing and good layers.

Definitely Buff Opringtons! They were our first and since then we got some Red Sex Links and they are nothing compared to our Buffs! The Buff girls are so sweet and have they best personalities. Great with kids and the whole family. We love them!
