This chicken came from McMurray hatchery last July as a day old chick. I had ordered all barred rock hens and got several roosters along with this one. It has the oddest build. They say it is a Barred Rock Rooster, and although it is marked like a barred rock, it does not have the body style of one. Almost looks like a guinea cross?

To me he looks like a barred rock born with a physical deformity.

What does that mean? Just a defect?

Rumplesness is generally characterized by malformation of or missing lower back vertebrae sometimes including the oil gland. I sort of just mangled that description - an on line search for 'rumplesness in chickens' will more correctly answer your question. I would not use him for breeding if he were mine.

Agree he could be rumpless. You can tell by a quick physical exam, If he has a tailbone, he's not rumpless. If there's no tailbone, he's rumpless. It's a recessive gene, some feel it can effect fertility. He's a normal hatchery Rock otherwise, but I'd also not use him for breeding.

Does he walk funny or is not really able to lift his head normally? he seems hunched over also.

Could be roach back or recessive rumpless. The latter is different from dominant rumpless as in araucanas, birds with the recessive type often have other physical deformities on the hips and spine.
