I haven't heard of a red/gold sexlink before. (And there seem to be so many sex link names for the same breed that my head spins a little - appropriate cuz we're so close to Halloween I guess... [IMG] )

Red Star, Red Comet, Cinnamon ... Are they all the same? Is red/gold sexlink also what others call one of these ???

    (BTW - thanks !)

Yes, Red-star, Cinnamon, Golden Queen, etc. Are called Sex-Links.

The males come out one color and the females come out a different color. The males and females are sexed by their down (fluffy stuff before the feathers come in) at a day old.

Thanks, Mikarod. I get that part about the sexlinks. I understand that specific roo's are bred to specific hens and the offspring is a specific type of sexlink.

What I'm unclear about is if the Red Stars, Red Comets (are there gold comets, too?) and Cinnamons are all different names for the same sexlink variety. And if so, which one is the more common name - Red sexlink? Gold sexlink? Black sexlink?

I am assuming that there will be very identifiable feather patterns and colors for the different varieties of sexlinks - especially since how each type is bred for is very specific.

I am wanting to know what type of sexlink my new hen is. Silkiechicken said she is a red/gold sexlink. I haven't heard of a red/gold before.

I could just refer to her as a sexlink, but I want to know more about her so we can maybe get another like her in the future.

Red Star etc... are all names for a red or buff male over a silver gened female, as far as I know there is no way to know which particular breeds were used unless you contact the breeder or hatchery.

Different breeder/hatcheries will sell different crosses under the same name, so that's no help. A Red Star may be a RIR x White Rock at one hatchery and a New Hamp x RIW at another.

Each individual can look very different even if they have the same parent breeds. Of my Golden Comets they ranged from having lots of white accents to having almost no white, from 5 to 8 pounds in weight, some had large combs, some had tiny ones. You wouldn't guess they were the same cross.

Because they are a production cross hatcheries aren't really interested in having standards. If you want another like your current one you'll just have to take your chances, sorry!

On another note, black sex links have a red or gold male over a barred female so they are quite different from red or gold sexlinks but they too have the same confusion over their origins. The male may be any number of different breeds and the barred female is most likely a Barred Rock but could be any other barred colored breed.

I have one of those. Someone told me it was a crossing between RIR and RIWhite.
I bought the chick when she was 3 days old as a female chick but now almost 5 months looks like a Rooster. A big beautifull bird. I still hope she is not a he. [IMG]

I say that she is a Golden Sexlink. She looks just like to 2 that I purchased from the feed store.

OMG, Ella ! From all the other sex link-related posts I read I thought there was more form and structure to it all !!!

So it sounds like I can call my sex link hen whichever of the red or gold names I like best - or even make up a new one of my own [IMG] (I'm kind of liking 'golden starlight'. Maybe I'll start a golden starlight sex link club or something. Anyone want to join?? [IMG] )
