So I picked up my local feed stores poultry order form the other day, and the list of breeds is limited. I'm wondering what breeds would be suitable as friendly chickens, and not flighty.

    Heres the list:

    Buff sex link
    Black sex link
    Rhode island red
    Barred Rocks
    White Leghorn
    Buff Orpington
    Speckled Sussex
    Golden Laced Wyandotte
    Buff Brahma
    Araucanas
    Golden Lakenvelder
    Iowa blue

    What should I choose?

    Thanks!

Quote:I have a barred rock chick that we have had for 2 weeks, she is 2 months old. She is the sweetest. Every time I open the coop, she jump on me. If we have her out running around and she gets scared (like of the rabbit. She is terrified of the bunny lol) She runs to me and jumps in my lap.

If we get anymore, I want more like her!

They highlighted some of the friendlier breeds in that quote. [IMG] I'm new to chickens, so I'm definitely not an expert. I've got Hamburgs (known to be a little flightly) and Barred Rocks. I can tell you that the Barred Rocks as chicks are already friendlier than the Hamburgs. They are easier to catch and don't complain as much if I need to clean off some poo, etc.

I believe the reply is the breeds in the Bold type;)

Funny because those exact three are what I think I'm going to order. That is as soon as I can get a definite answer on whether or not chickens are allowed in my town. The barred rock may get changed to a Brahma though, but I can't decide. But maybe the barred rock will stay on the list because I also can't decide whether or not to get 3 or 4 chickens total [IMG]

I also have a Buff. She is gorgeous, social and friendly. She KNOWS she's pretty and stands so proud, lol. Not flighty at all. She never even leaves the ground unless our other chicken is startled and flaps off, then she will too. Peer pressure I suppose, lol. But even though we got her as a pullet and they had little to none human interaction, over the last few months she has grown to really like us and gets very excited when she sees us coming. Our other chicken who we got with her is some type of Delaware cross and she is NOT friendly.
