I have a coop and run behind my garage and there is a rabbit hutch and dog kennel right there too.

I just noticed something has been robbing straw from a variety of places,,rabbit hutch, garage or kennel. And has a large straw nest in a tree above my chicken coop.

It's very odd really,,,only about 15 ft of the ground and a mess of straw jammed into the crotch of the tree. Looks halfway like a bird nest, but too big I think,,,and too small for a squirrel nest.
Also signs that this thing has built the same type nest in my garage eves.

My garage is in rough shape,,,

Strange thing is,,we are out there allot and have never seen any animal. Nor have we ever seen a squirrel in the yard anywhere. Nothing has been messing with chickens either.

Im wondering if it could be a rat?? Do they do this type thing?? I have seen some signs of them in the past. but not lately. (Holes tunneled into and around coop)

Picture with size reference. Could be a native rat species like a wood rat but even those I thought nested in crevises or in ground.
