    Hello BYC!

My barred rock and buff orpington chicks love to peck at their pine bedding for something interesting. They are 4-5 days old. Is there anything I can give them to peck at that won't involve ingesting pine shreddings? :) Thanks!

There isn't much you can do to keep chicks from pecking at shavings, other than covering them with a paper towel or something-- my chicks, and even my adult birds often peck at shavings. However, you can try to occupy them (for a short while) by giving them some mealworms to scratch for or some short perches to jump onto. Pieces of lettuce, tomato, etc. can also be given (but make sure that they have some grit).

TSC has little chick treat log thingys. it is on the isle with the feed for chickens. You can hang it but I just put one on a dish and at first they didnt know what it was then I took my finger and broke a piece off and they figured out there was yummy stuff inside.

    worth a try. [IMG]

Give them a pie plate with about 1/2" of dirt to play in.
