I have 10 buff orpingtons that are around 4 1/2 to 5 months old. The past couple of weeks 2 of the girls squat down real low and open their wings a little bit when i go to pick them up. They have never done this before. We don't have a rooster. Any ideas?

Quote:It's a sign of submission to a rooster; that's what they do when a rooster approaches for mating. It's also an indicator that they're getting ready to lay eggs pretty soon!!! [IMG]

It seems to start about 2 weeks before the eggs do. It's a little annoying, when you're walking and they stop dead in their tracks. I'm always nearly stepping on chickens!
