what gender is my chicken?

I bought what I thought is a hen, but I'm starting to think its a roo. A old man I ran into at the feed store buying chicken feed told me to go home and get the chicken hold it upside down. But I can't tell what he meant?

Ok I thought so! Do you all know anything about holding a chicken by Its legs and turning it upside down to tell sex? I think one sex tries to lift head up???

I have never heard of it. It might be an old wives tale. He might have meant vent sexing, and that its easier to do while holding upside down? I'm not sure what he meant
