I have a SLW that was given to me by a friend.I can't tell if it's a roster or a hen. I have had her for 5 months. I thought there would be some signs by now to indicate what it is. There hasnt been any extra eggs in the coop, no crows, or spurs. I'm curious to find out what gender it is to know what to order for this spring. Thank you´┐╝!

Things to look for in a roo are long, flowing hackle (neck) and saddle feathers, sickle feathers around the tail, obviously larger combs and wattles and of course the spurs and the crow. Keep in mind that laying age for hens is anywhere from 6-9 months, give or take a few, so if it is a pullet, five months is still pretty young. If it's a roo, some of the signs should be noticeable by now. If you still can't tell, post a picture! [IMG]

It is ever a good idea to go by spurs, as both hens and rooster can get them

That's correct! Now that you say that, one of my friend's game cross hens has half inch long spurs. Thought it was a roo for the longest time until she laid an egg. Should've put that earlier, but I just remembered.[IMG]
