What happened to my chick (photo)

I found one of my baby chicks (3 days old) dead this afternoon. After when we picked her up we discovered this just below her chest, it is hard and crusty? Does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be?

Other chicks may have pecked his "umbilical" cord off or something?

The umbilical cord might not have closed up and bacteria could have gotten in.....

Yeah that may have happened, too.

Thank you so much, it is a relief knowing what may have happened to the poor chick. I was sad to loose her as she was so sweet.
