Willow is spending more and more time outside, so it's past time to start her on heart worm preventative. She's 5 months old and has tooken her first HeartGuard pill. I have never heard of any other types. She also needs to get on some flea preventative/killer. I have no clue what is best. She's about 45 pounds now and loves to get wet so waterproof is necessary.

I work for a veterinarian. We recommend either Heargard or Interceptor for the heartworm preventative. Here, Heartgard is a little cheaper than Interceptor. Plus it's kind of a beefy chew treat they love.

For flea control we recommend Frontline as it also does ticks (Lyme's disease, ehrlichia and anaplasma) and it is also waterproof. We hear people all the time complaining it's not working, but you really need to use it religously every 28-30 days. I do my heartworm preventative and Frontline on the same day so I don't forget either of them.

I also use both year round so I don't forget to start them back again in the spring. Plus those darn fleas just love a warm cozy house in the winter.

At our clinic here in So. WV we have had 2 heartworm positive and 6 Lyme's disease positive dogs already this year.

We get the Heartguard Plus generic from the vet, which is Iverhart Plus. We use comfortis for the fleas on the dogs, since we don't have a major tick problem. The cats are strictly indoors, so we only treat them if we see a flea; which we haven't in two years.
I don't give the dogs the comfortis over the winter, after we get our first hard freeze and then start them back on it in the spring, as soon as the nightly temps. go above freezing.
We give the two things - the iverhart and the comfortis seperately - to avoid stomach upset. The iverhart on the 3rd of each month and the comfortis on the 15th.

I use Interceptor for all my dogs. I've used it for as long as I can remember. Love it.

Frontline didn't do crap for us two summers ago, so we switched back to the tried-and-true Advantage.

Please remember some breeds (such as collies) can't take Heartgauard/Ivermectin!! It is lethal.
