What is a chemical heat pack for shipping chicks?

    It's a Hot Hands pack placed under the packing material. They can be purchased at any store with hunting/camping supplies.

    But they only last 10-18 hours, so it seems like they would run out too quickly.

    That is what I thought, but they only last 7 or 8 hours, right? What happens to the chicks after that?

    They last about 12 hours before they begin to cool. Since the chicks are in a box with some packing for a cusion the box hold the heat well. The chicks also make some of there own heat and that fluffy down keeps them warm. When my peeps arrived from MPC the heat pack was still warm and they had been in there about 28 hours.
