I am going to get some young silkies this week and I wanted to get a rooster because I heard that they go broody often. I live in a suburban area and I want a rooster that is quiet. My friend said that silkie roos are quiet but they don't fertilize well. Is that true? I also have other chickens that I want to breed so my second option is a barred rock. What should I go with? Thank You!

Well, I'm going to say Light Sussex.
They have a very nice temperament- I've never heard of an aggressive one.
Very good fertility for a good few years.
Not loud at all. Nice, pretty, quiet and gentle.
I think a Light Sussex cockerel would be good for you :)

How often a rooster crows depends more on the individual than the breed. Smaller roosters tend to have higher pitched crows, larger roosters tend to have deeper voices. But they are all about equal in the volume.

A Silkie rooster can fertilize hens just as well as any other rooster. I've got a Barred Rock/Easter Egger cross out in the coop right now that has been crowing since 4 AM.
