What is "brooding"?

One of my girls has taken to going off away from the other chickens. She stays away all day. This is not like how she has been. All of them are under the age of one. A friend of mine says she is "brooding". He said that they do this when they are wanting to raise babies. Is that correct??

Yes. Broody or Brooding means that a hen is sitting a nest to hatch the eggs. You can research "broody" on here to find out more info.

Brooding is when a hen or pullet wants to hatch her eggs... she usually sits on her eggs and only gets up to get food and water once or twice a day...
