My kids just came in and had this "thing" in their hand.. at first I thought the little thing was a snake egg but we cut it open and it it not
    [IMG]

it appears that the "egg" looking thing is a seed pod for this
    [IMG]

It grows in a damp area of the yard with these yellow flowers/weeds

they are all in this area not just isolated to one area
    [IMG]

this is what it looks like cut open

IT STINKS [IMG] the red tube is very fragile and cracks when squished with some force but feels rubbery in the hand

the egg looking thing is firm when we tried to cut it

and yes we all had rubber gloves on when we were touching it and washed very well when we were done....

    What is this?
    Is it poisonous?

    thanks

It looks like a mushroom, but I don't know what kind. It probably stinks because it's either poisonous or tastes like YUCK. Do you have a mushroom ID book for your area? Could look it up on the internet as well. I'm pretty sure there's fungus among us in most places this time of the year!
Just saw the previous answers. So there you have it!

    That's kind of cute!

Looks like they must have named it after they named C. elegans (a worm).
