Got this little one four days ago from Ideal. It has pinkish yellowish clean legs and what looks like a single comb. It was super hard to get this little one to keep still!

I'd say New Hampshire or Production Red.

Are those anything like RIRs temperament wise?

When I say Production Red, I mean the birds commonly sold as "Rhode Islands." They aren't RIRs, they share nothing with real RIRs and yes, they can have very nasty temperaments. A New Hampshire, on the other hand, does not have that tendency towards nastiness. Looking at this chick I would lean toward it being a New Hampshire, but it could go either way at this age.

Lets hope it is a NH, I already have two RIRs (a 2 week old and a 4 day old) and the two week old has already earned the name "Dragon". [IMG]

Production Reds are absolute pests and it's such a shame they are the modern representative of a "Rhode Island Red." I've had so many people come over to my place, and look at my breeder stock RIRs and go, "Hey, what are those?" because they're so different in appearance they aren't even recognizable to folks who only know today's mislabeled "RIRs". They're 2x the size of my Production Red, completely different color and shape, and very friendly. Not even the same breed.

I would LOVE to have some ACTUAL RIRs!
I went to the Comal County fair yesterday and they had some of the most beutiful RIRs (along with other breeds) that I've ever seen! [IMG]

You might consider Dick Horstman. He's a breeder out of PA who sells his chicks for very reasonable prices. That's where mine came from, and although they aren't what I'd call show quality, they are the real deal for sure and completely different from any Production Red you've ever laid your eyes on. I also have some of his Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks and they are things of beauty.

The next time I need layers I'll try him.
Have you gotten any of his Silver Grey Dorkings? I'm interested in the breed and would like to get some that don't come from a hatchery.
