Okay chicken experts, I have a one year old white leghorn. She's always made wonderful eggs, including made her first double Yolker the first 4 months of her laying. But tonight as I cracked open one of her eggs to make scrambled eggs, this sort of rubbery (dare i say) raw chicken like piece of meat, plopped out. That's the only way I know how to explaine this odd thing. Can someone please give me some insight to what on earth this may be?

Did she possibly start to incubate that egg? That's the best possible answer I can think of for what you are describing. I saw a few of those in my FFA high school classes and science classes.

As soon as she laid it I brought it inside to my basket. 2 days later I cracked it open to cook. And I do not have a rooster. It just shocked me. I poked at it to feel it's texture and it shocked me how much it felt like actual raw chicken meat feels. I wish I could get my phone to upload the photo I took.

I keep trying to add the picture but it won't let me [IMG] This dime size piece was separate from the rest of the eggs inside the shell. Yolk was pretty and yellow and full, separate from the white as it should be but when I cracked it, everything fell into the pan as normal and behind it fell out this meaty piece. I guess I'll just need to really keep an eye on her.

Yeah I would keep an eye on her. The double yolk is a bit worrisome too, especially for a leghorn. Double yolks also show a "glitch" in the reproductive system and supposedly hens that lay them frequently have more reproductive problems.

If that were my bird and was a pet I might think about a hormone implant to stop laying.

Thank you all for the links and information. My 6 hens have a purpose, to lay eggs for food and when it's time, that they will serve as a meal after their time of egg laying. [IMG] Hubby made me promise not to name them and reminds me daily they aren't pets like our dogs, tho he sees me spoiling them constantly and tending to their every need. [IMG] I'll try to get on my computer to download the photo I have. The phone app to upload a photo is not working.
