what kind of lightbulb for a heat lamp

    what wattage should i have for 1/2 month old chicks

    I have a red 250w in my brooder.... they seem comfortable.

    It depends on the size of your brooder and how warm the ambient temperature is. I'm using a 4x2 ft dog kennel with boarded up sides and a 100 W bulb has worked great. I had a 250 W and it got way too hot for them in my house.

    If the chicks are 2 weeks old, you want a bulb that will heat a portion of the brooder to about 80 degrees F. The strength of the bulb that's needed will depend on ambient temperatures.
