What made you decide to raise chickens?

We found my 5 year old sneaking up to bed with a store bought egg one night. When we asked her about it she said that she wanted to hatch a baby chick. My husband grew up in the country and his family had chickens so after talking it over we decided to go ahead and let my daughter "hatch" her egg. We swapped out the store bought eggs for realistic looking fake eggs and after a few days we swapped out the fake eggs for the baby chicks while she was at school. When she got home from school she was so shocked to see her new baby chicks had hatched.

Thats a really nice thing to do! I'm sure she must be over the moon! It's great to involve kids in caring for animals - sense of responsibility and all that. It's something that she will never forget and who knows - she may become an avid BYCer in many years to come!

    All the best

We bought two and a half acres a couple years ago. We put in a 600 sq. ft. raised bed garden, four beehives, 16 tree fruit and nut orchard, and now....the husband wants chickens. So I guess, just the natural progression of the property.

Our chickens will be workers though. We are building our run around the garden so they can clear the border of weeds and insects. :)

Every year I put in a large garden and by August it would be overrun with grasshoppers. Chickens are the most efficient and eco friendly way to deal with them. The odd watermelon or squash that they snack on is a small price to pay.

What a sweet, charming story! Your little daughter is lucky to have such responsive and understanding parents.

I got into raising chickens eight or nine years ago when I decided to adopt a sustainable life style. It's since turned into an addiction and the chickens are now lovable pets.

When my oldest son was 3 years old we took him to a farm. We were the only ones there so we got a personal tour. The lady went into the chicken coop and came out with a green egg to give my son. I was hooked. Nearly 40 years later I was able to get 3 EEs.

I finally have a place outside of the city where I can have them. Makes me feel okay about eating eggs when I know the chickens are having a great life (I'm a vegetarian otherwise). And there are all the other plusses such as bug control, rich compost, chicken TV...

    This is the sweetest story!
A coworker of mine and I have gotten close and she has chickens. My 13 year old daughter told me how much she likes chickens so I figured we would give it a try. We just bought a house in a small town and I can't wait. Our babies are set to hatch on LEAP DAY!!! This weekend we are building our coop and preparing for our babies ;)

I've wanted to have chickens since we bought our farm 4 years ago. When my husband took up hunting again he got more interested in the concept of self sustainability, and somehow my daughter and I talked him around to it! He is now the official chicken tractor designer/builder. There are so many predators up here my birds will never be free rangers, but they will be mobile!
