My experience overseas (Europe) was that the food was ALWAYS better than here in the States, fresher and higher quality with more locally produced products. I'm hoping to find good stuff in South America as well, but I will be traveling though some third world countries and am really looking forward to discovering the culture and traditions there.
I never ate at the "recommened" places, the back alley and no name places always had the best food. I'll always remember my first trip to Hong Kong there was a bunch of people all excited because there was a mickey d"s there. You could have knocked me over with a feather. We ended up at a really back alley place in the Wan Chai district and the front room looked like a pet store/ veggie market, come to find out later...... ya you get the idea, fresh as fresh can be.
