Okay I dont know what to do ..... I have a verry sweet 3-4 month silky roo...I somehow missed a big foot injury...He has a toe on his left foot that somehow got bent under his foot and he has been walking on it for some time before I noticed it....yes I feel VERY GUILTY FOR NOT SEEING IT... now he is starting to hobble . The vet says as long as bumble foot doesnt occur he should be alright.

well it seems that the padding is thicking up causing the hobbling and I dont see an infection settling in. I asked for a quote for surgury to remove the bad toe and it will cost around $240.00- $270.00 to remove the problem toe. Needless to say.. I am ready to tell
my hubby to forgo putting in bamboo flooring in the workshopp we are finishing - buy a cheap flooring instead and lets get his foot fixed. On the other hand he is just a roo and its alot of money to spend on a roo. What would you do????

Sorry you (and the roo, too!) have to go through this! It's so hard to know what to do. Can you post a picture of the toe? Maybe seeing it will spark some ideas.

[IMG] Don't beat yourself up for not noticing sooner. He was probably hiding the injury.

Can you still bend the toe back to where it belongs? You could make a little sandal for the foot to hold the toe correctly I've seen it on here before with foot problems. Good luck

Quote:I second that sentiment. Chickens, like all birds, are experts at hiding their weaknesses. As prey animals, they need to be. Sherlock Holmes probably would have missed this one.

Silky Ma, it's really hard for us to make that call. Each of us could post and have a differing opinion each with a variety of reasons. It's never easy to make this decision, especially when funds are short and it's not for seen ahead of time. It hardly ever is, just like we usually get sick on the weekend when things are closed.

Only you, will know what is best for your situation. If it were me, I would be reasoning through all the elements, the bird's long term quality of life, cost of procedure, what funds are available now or in the near future, the construction project you are currently doing, the other birds that I have, etc. If you think it through you will know what to do. Sometimes we go with our heart and other times we just have to go with our head. Whatever you decide, I am sure it will be what is best for your situation.

Here's hoping that you have peace either way.

try and see if you can get a few other quotes. You could pad his foot and wrap with vet wrap to cushion it.........
