I have a small flock. 7 red sex links, 2 buff orpington X RIR, and a black copper maran rooster. I have eggs in the bator days away from lockdown and find myself wandering what to expect?

Should they be decent layers? Anyone have some experience?

color wise, you're going to get a lot of black chicks with red leakage. white skin, and lightly feathered legs if the father has feathered legs.

Production wise, most Marans aren't high production birds, so he may bring down the level of the sex link hens. Egg color should be darker than theirs, though.

Darker eggs is a plus. Decent production is a big plus. It all happened by chance that i got these breeds. It was just what was on cl the day i decided to get into chickens. I wanted a rir roo but didnt find any

I hear marans are pretty good for the table as well. So thats a big plus.
I guess my end goal is dual purpose heavy birds

Right on! Im hoping they lay ok. Some people say marans lay ok, not like sexlinks, but not too bad. Theres really no telling what i will get though and i kinda like the surprise factor.

Im going to look for RIR rooster in the future though because it seems just about every breed they cross with makes some kind of high production bird. Right now i have the birds stated, some 10 week old dark cornish bantams, 4 RIR and 5 Barred rock chicks from the feedstore and the eggs in the bator. It should be a pretty diverse flock in a few months

Thanks for the replies. I'll post some pics if they hatch.
