What to feed retired chickens?

    Should chickens that are older and have quit laying be given a feed other than layer feed? My chickens are still chicks, but I know a couple people around here with elderly pet chickens that have been wondering about it. Hopefully, my babies will have long lives too! :DThanks!

    I will be watching this thread, curious as well if there are any feeding differences. I assume you keep them on layer..

    I was always ready to feed my roosters a little scratch and not much more but didn't want to separate them from the laying hens.

    The layer feed with 4 to 6 times the calcium needs of a non-laying bird, seems excessive in that mineral for your friends' retired hens.
